My Family Session Outfit Guide

A couple weeks ago it was my family’s turn for fall photos. As I was putting our outfits together for the photos I thought it would be a great process to share with all of you. So here is my little family session outfit guide from me to you!

  1. Pick colors based on the season. Warmer colors in fall and softer colors in the spring. Try to keep everything subtle or muted in color so the focus stays on the family and not their clothing.
  2. Always start with mom. (In this case, that’s me!) If mom feels good in what she is wearing she will approve of the photos. I always go with long dresses to keep the focus off my legs and more on my family’s faces.
  3. Keep at least one person in a pattern. Since I chose a dress with some pattern for me, I put my husband in a solid color with jeans. I also chose a fall colored pattern shirt for my middle son so I kept my daughter and baby in solid. I found a solid but textured romper for baby brother for a little added contrast.
  4. Put girls in dresses. At least I always suggest that because the movement the dresses give looks great for photos!
  5. Always chose natural colored shoes. Again, keeping the focus on faces not feet. I do however keep babies (non-walking) barefoot! Let those cute tiny baby feet be free!
  6. Think about the weather. It ended up being warmer than I had anticipated so I decided last minute to put the baby in a short sleeve shirt and roll/push up brother and sister’s sleeves. My husband and I were in short sleeves anyways so I think it looked better in the end.

I hope this will ease the process as you prep for your next family photo session! Check out how our photos (taken by Madison Thomson Photography, edited by me) turned out below!
